2009 Prayer Sister Update

Mission Statement

To use the Holy Bible and our testimonies to build each lady up until she knows in her heart, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she is “God’s favorite daughter.” To raise her self-image so she will not accept suicide, domestic abuse, or substance abuse as normal behavior, giving her a higher legacy of self-worth to pass on to future native generations.

History

The founder, Maridie Olson, is an Aleut, born in Cordova, Alaska. Four years later her Father moved his family to Seattle, Washington. Because Maridie's mother was frequently in hospitals and her father was in prison, she and her siblings were required to stay with relatives, friends and in children's homes.

The one positive parental influence in Maridie’s life was her “Heavenly Daddy”, whom she had met when she was ten years old. He lovingly placed her in homes where people nurtured her and cared deeply about her physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. As Maridie was shifted from home to home, changed schools six times in eighth grade, she became very insecure, but always aware of the love and stability of her Heavenly Father. She graduated from King’s Garden High School in Seatte and then attended Simpson Bible College, without Government assistance. God had blessed her life with everything she ever needed or wanted. She always told her friends she was spoiled rotten, by her heavenly "Daddy." She and her husband had two children and then adopted two more because she never wanted any child to grow up with the same insecurity she had.

After the Alaska Native Land Claim Settlement was available, Maridie began to read about the plight of the native women in Alaska Native Villages. She learned about ladies with black eyes and teeth knocked out by their husbands. They never complained because this was normal life in too many homes. Suicide was higher than anywhere else in the United States. Alcoholism made all of this worse.

In the late 1980’s Anchorage Daily News printed a very large section on “People in Peril.” This added to Maridie’s already growing concern. Many hours of tears filled her pleas to her Heavenly Daddy.

“Father why, why have I been blessed my whole life with so much love while these ladies don’t experience Your love at all”

The only answer she could hear was that she needed to take the love she had experienced in her life and do the best she could to introduce these precious hurting ladies to the only God she knew, A GOD OF LOVE! Surely if they could know His goodness they would want to know Him better! As a teenager Maridie never drank or tried smoking because she would never do anything to hurt the loving Heavenly Daddy she knew. She could never hurt Him because He was so GOOD. His love was so great!

This is the God these ladies need! Tundra Blossoms was born!

Activities

BIBLE STUDY ~ exclusively concerning the high regard that God holds toward His beloved, and His promises for our provisions, desires, happiness, health, and endeavors: enabling us to change our self-image by seeing ourselves through God's eyes.

ESTABLISHING PRAYER HABITS ~ conducive to problem solving that detracts from the destructive prison of self-pity.

HAPPY WINTER EVENTS ~ planned to foster positive relationships that encourage, pamper, praise, appreciate, and build on individual strengths during the cold winter months.

EDUCATION ~ that discourages destructive habits of criticism, condemnation, gossip, and past negative labels.

PAMPERING PRIZES ~ designed to build self-esteem. Examples: haircuts, manicures, beauty aids, lunches, dinners, plaques, certificates, and prize ribbons: use creative freedom excessively.

PRAYER SISTERS ~ from outside Alaska assigned to each Tundra Blossom who requests one. A prayer Sister makes a commitment to pray daily for her own Tundra Blossom, and to do anything she might think of to build the self image of said Blossom in the form of a card or bookmark, or any other small blessing that mails easily. Sending items is not required, but prayer is.

DOLL SHOWS ~ for little girls ages 5 to 11. They bring their dolls and stuffed animals to be judged on the smallest, biggest best dressed, and oldest etc. They receive ribbons, and prizes for other things. All of them will receive prizes. We have a short story time concerning little girl safety issues, concentrating heavily on building their self-image.

About Us

We achieve our mission by planting seeds of God's love that will ignite sparks in tangible ways, building up their self-esteem. We are depending on God to show us ways that HE wants to bless them. HE wants to heal their hurts and show them ways to avoid some of the pains of life. He can use our arms to hold them. He can use little things from us, outside of Alaska. He can show His love in small treats, prayers, companionship, and supportive relationships. He can help us find ways to pamper them in their harsh environment. We are here to serve His precious daughters. We can teach them how to use tools that will help them overcome negative situations that bind them in depression. We can help build faith to develop life skills that can lead them to victory.

Future Events

As more women join our trips, we will be able to send two women at a time to each village. Teen Rallies and little girl functions will follow.
